Well, This is going to sound crazy but as I was writing this post, the drive seemed to just have randomly mounted and the icon apppeared on my desktop. I formatted the drive to exfat myself a while ago before making a backup of my previous files sucessfully. Keep in mind that this also goes on to say the drive comes preformatted in FAT32 yada yada. It comes up in disk utility as a WD My Passport etc but it won't mount.

They have changed things around - used to have to enter a serial number and it would download an archive of what was on the early MyBook drives - I'd just reformat the drive to NTFS, install the button manager and it worked. I have never had the button indicate the capacity though - so maybe that driver has to go on the drive? I have installed the only Mac driver in the above list - the Button manager. I download that and put it on the root of the drive? The only problem I can see is that the file is a PC one and my WD has been reformatted to OSX for time machine. I'm assuming the software you are referring to is the 'My Book Premium Edition Software (Including WD Backup)'.
